Clyde Burke Milwaukee braves 1954
Clyde Burke
“At 78 years old and health not the best I would just like to say that I played in this All-Star Game in 1954. The brain is a little Fuzzy going back that many years but if I remember right the rotation of the first three pitchers was Mombouquette, Latman, and myself. I remember we stayed at the Hotel New Yorker and I was just Awestruck by this big and beautiful city. I never saw so many people going back and forth up and down and around and around. They wined us and dined us like we were kings and sometimes I thought I was one.
To see Yankee Stadium and practice there and just to think all the great ball players that played in the stadium down through the years you actually got the shivers just thinking about it. Then over to the Polo Grounds all the same feelings coming back to you just like they did when you were at Yankee Stadium. Then all the sightseeing it would make your head swim, Coney Island, the Empire State Building, Times Squire and on and on - how much can an 18-year-old take!
One night we were out on the town and somehow the three or four of us got separated and I was on my own and to be very honest I was scared so I hailed down a cab and told him to take me to the Hotel New Yorker and on the drive there, the cab driver and I started talking and I mentioned why I was in New York and could not believe it but he asked for my autograph, the first and last time I ever gave out my autograph. It was a good feeling. I have just touched the surface here and I do not know where this will end up but it was nice talking about an 18-year-old on an August week or so in New York City. Now that I am in the sunset of my life I once read that you can have many things in this life but what you can’t have is TIME. Makes sense to me.”
Burke had earned the trip to New York, along with a watch given to the three top players, based on his performance at the annual All-Star game in Milwaukee on July 19. In that game, he had pitched three scoreless innings, did not allow a hit, and struck out four batters. In the Hearst Sandlot Classic in New York, Burke pitched the sixth and seventh innings and did not allow a run. He allowed only an infield hit and struck out two batters. The 6-5½ hurler did not play professionally. After a two year stint in the Army, he entered the construction industry.
And he had other memories of his stay in New York. After hearing bad things about the big city, he was surprised and gratified when, after losing his wallet, a bus driver found the wallet and returned it to him. In those days, the area around Times Square had its share of unsavory characters. One time, Burke and teammate Carol Schiffel from Baltimore were walking down the street when they were intercepted by a “gentleman” who suggested they go with him to Central Park and enjoy some time with the ladies. The young men were quick to decline the offer and headed back to their hotel rooms.
But Burke’s best memories of New York came when he took to the mound at the Polo Grounds.
Burke was accompanied to New York by slugging outfielder Jim Duce. In the All-Star game at Milwaukee, Duce had three of his team’s nine hits. Duce earned a spot in the starting lineup for the game in New York when he slugged two homers during the team’s final pre-game workout. Duce did not play professionally.
As customary, Milwaukee named an alternate to the game in New York. This time around, it was Brad Splinter. Splinter did not play professionally.

KAN ER IEMAND IETS MAKEN VOOR MIJ A.U.B.
.

.
DANK U
